New Command, Same Heart: Inside Kirtland Medical Group’s Next Chapter

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. - The 377th Medical Group has been redesignated as the Kirtland Medical Group as part of a Department of the Air Force-wide transition to the newly established Air Force Medical Command.

As part of the transition, medical groups are being aligned to reflect their host installations rather than their traditional wing alignments. The change moves the KMG from its previous alignment under Air Force Global Strike Command to Air Force Medical Command.

This change is designed to streamline administrative command and control, standardize healthcare delivery structures across the force, and simplify organizational identities for joint forces and civilian partners.

“Our redesignation to KMG marks a change in organizational structure, not in our commitment to Kirtland AFB,” said Col. Cody J. Hess, KMG commander. “Our mission remains the same: to deliver the support Team Kirtland needs, ready to support the call and fight - whenever and wherever we are needed.”

The KMG supports more than 40,000 TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries in the greater Albuquerque area, including active-duty Airmen and Guardians, military families, retirees and other eligible beneficiaries.

“The name may be changing, but our mission hasn’t,” said Airman 1st Class Chiara Afui, Kirtland Healthcare Operations Squadron aerospace medical technician. “We’re still focused on taking care of our Airmen, families and beneficiaries while keeping the force ready.”

By identifying directly with Kirtland Air Force Base, the new name provides a clearer organizational identity for military members, families, civilian partners and community stakeholders in the Albuquerque area.

For the Airmen who work there and the beneficiaries they serve, the transition represents a new chapter in name and command alignment, but the mission stays the same: taking care of the force and the people who call Kirtland home.
