Mecklenburg County woman charged with medical insurance fraud

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Remonica Corlishia Earl, 48, of 4209 Howie Circle, Charlotte. Earl was charged with insurance fraud.

According to the arrest warrant, Earl is accused of submitting false and misleading information to UNUM Insurance Co. in connection with five accidental/disability insurance claims involving herself and her children. Special agents from the Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division accuse Earl of submitting altered medical records from Atrium Health and OrthoCarolina using incorrect addresses, listing a doctor who was not a provider at the facility and indicating that the doctor treated her or her children on dates when the doctor did not see them. The defendant received $6,980 in insurance payments related to the five claims.

The offenses occurred on May 1, 2025.

Earl was held on a $20,000 secured bond and will appear in a Mecklenburg County District Court on Sept. 23.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C.
